Satisfied (Poem)

Sunset at the Dock

Sunset at the Dock

I take singular joy in resting my head upon the pillow.

*Kamo no Chōmei [Japan]. Hōjōki [1300s]. A Buddhist Reflection on Solitude: Imperfection and Transcendence.

Satisfy: Latin satisfacere is from a root "to do enough." As an adjective, "to be satisfied" means "to have had enough done; a sense of enough, not feeling lack." A relationship with something more than our needs and wants graces us with satisfaction. This is fruitful ground, then, for appreciation and gratitude. Meditation, when not meditating to get something or become something other than our ordinary, wonderful selves, is a practice in this satisfaction. Life is the practice, too. So, let us practice. When we feel unsatisfied, this can be something to listen to, to ask, "From where comes this?" Often, this comes from a disconnection from our own Heart. We can always return to our Heart, now.

Satisfied

Beggar person and affluent person -
same in the Eyes of Love.

Grace hugs a pope and a prostitute
with the same arms.

Sound of a temple bell and of your footsteps -
same delight to Life.

Do you think your Friend needs religion?
You might, not the Friend.
Your Friend wants you: You!

As long as you keep stretching over the ditch,
your legs are bound to keep aching.

Listen to the pain,
jump into the Stream.

For a moment -
Don't name
Don't evaluate
Appreciate.

Entering one,
fear becomes love, for you were born
a lover.

this only takes a moment

Why divide the world between wine and dregs?
Why not see stars in the midday sky? -
your Heart already does.

There are worlds inside that
one bubble of boiling water.
Everything pulsates with your own substance.

You would feel this,
if you would get to know your own Heart.

Can you stop talking long enough?
Can you stop doing long enough?
Can you make love with the Lover,
with excuses like, “I really want to, but I don’t have time”?

Lovers do not have time,
Lovers love.

People do not find time (as though anyone could) - Why?
they are afraid to know themselves
and their freedom to give and receive love.

They are not afraid of the Lover
as much as their own Dignity and Worth.

Why wear a pauper's frown,
when you hold the world in your hands?

So, if you wish, go on and do your own thing,
while the Sun shines, patiently waiting
for when you invite delightful intercourse.

A man complained, “I can't see the Sun for that temple.”
Grace said, “Then, burn it down. Here’s a match and some fuel.”

One day, the Friend heard a woman lament, “I'm so lonely.”
He said, “Then, be quiet and kiss Me!”

Why fiddle with a penny,
when a diamond is inviting, “Fiddle with Me for a while!”

Follow your pining back
to its Source.

If you want the Beloved in you,
quit running and open up.

people run in many ways, not just with their feet

The answer to your seeking is
in the seeking.
Quit seeking, listen!

In Wisdom's way:
Water creates thirst.
If you are thirsty for love,
you can be sure there is a Lover nearby.

There is a Grace, right now, flowing from
the Hidden Essence of every creature.
Drink it, and be satisfied.
