Faithful Stewards

Nov 8, 2005

Saying For Today: … it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.

Story
Newsweek (11/19/90) had an article “Letters in the Sand,” a group of letters written by military personnel to family and friends in the States during the Gulf War. Marine Corporal Preston Coffer wrote one. Coffer said to a friend, “We are talking about Marines, not the Boy Scouts. We all joined the service knowing full well what might be expected of us.” He signed off with the Marine motto, Semper Fi: Latin, “always faithful.”

Scripture: I Corinthians 4.1-2 (NRSV)

Think of us [Apostles] in this way, as servants of Christ and stewards of God’s mysteries. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy.

Spiritual Exercises
1. Read and reflect on the above Scripture. What does it say to you? What does it call for you to be or do?
2. What is a steward? What is the relationship between “steward” and “stewardship”?
3. Which of the following two do you prefer: “being successful” or “being faithful”? Explain.

Prayer
Strengthen me to be faithful in my relationship with other persons and you. Amen.
