A Poisonous Root of Bitterness

On Healing of Hurt Feelings

Aug 14, 2008

Saying For Today: In working prayerfully through bitterness, we must move past blaming someone outside us for our feelings.

Having the support of those close to us can be the difference between success and failure. Dennis Cleary is a politician who, in 2002, sought a sixth term in the General Assembly of the State of Connecticut. But he got no support from his family. It seems that Dennis had a falling out with his siblings over the handling of their father's estate. The siblings responded with newspaper ads and signs on their lawns supporting Dennis' political opponent.

''We are tired of Dennis,'' said the ad. ''Are you?''

Paul informs the Ephesian Church of the Christlike attitude and speech we are to have toward everyone; he clarifies that we are not to court bitterness of attitude or harshness of word against anyone:

30 And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.
31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

*Ephesians 4.30-32, NLT

Paul makes clear that the harmful feelings and actions given in verse thirty one were a problem among the Ephesian Christians. Otherwise, he would not have said, "Get rid of all...." We in Christ are not beyond the same deleterious feelings found among other persons.

The writer of Hebrews speaks, also, of the Christlike attitude we are to seek to have toward others. The writer warns us of the "poisonous root of bitterness" that can bring harm upon many others. Indeed, often bitterness expands into a wider circle, as is seen in the example of many families who become divided, often over trivial matters.

14 Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. 15 Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. 16 Make sure that no one is immoral or godless like Esau, who traded his birthright as the firstborn son for a single meal.

*Hebrews 12.14-16, NLT
