A Zen disciple of Master Kassan left him, after living with the Master a time. He went on pilgrimage, after the teachings began not to suit him. Everywhere he went, he heard praise of Master Kassan as the best of Teachers. Finally, he returned. He greeted the Master, and he demanded, "Why did you not reveal your profound understanding to me?" Master Kassan, with a gentle smile, asked, "When you boiled rice, did I not light the fire? When you handed out food, did I not hold out my bowl to receive it? When did I ever betray you?" Hearing this, the monk was enlightened.

If Grace were
not here
not now
where would
It be?

If Grace were
not for you
not for me
not for everyone
whom would
It be for?

Coming
to the end of seeking
What is found?
What cannot
be found.

I cannot
tell you
What That is
for that would
not be That.

So
I will
be Silent, Now.
