Poem

An Accord Inexplicable

From where did this
taste of sublime sweetness
come to rest upon my lips,
lips bereft, before, of such supernal satisfaction?

“Friend, are you so surprised
that such fine flavor
would flow from so singular a gift of Love,
and for you yourself, though you feel unworthy, to savor?”

Then, Beloved, please let me know
this one thing, for my contentment:
How could such touch impart
enjoyment so healing and heavenly here on earth?

"For I give, My Dearest,
not the outer sensation of flesh~which is passing~,
nor infuse with mere pleasing thought of mind~which leaves one empty~;
I give Myself and, thereby,
Entering you, Love mingles with love in an accord inexplicable.”

Comments

Grace is not simply impartation of something, like an energy or power, from God to you, regardless of how holy you esteem the something given. Rather, the word grace intimates the mystery of God giving Godself to you. God ceaselessly pours out, without losing any of the Essence of God, the Divine Being for you to receive and enjoy, and eternally.

God, being Love, gives of Godself. This giving is an inward Presence flowing from the initiated contact~from the Divine, the Creator, to you, the creature.

Colossians 2.6 informs us "as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him" (ESV). A key word there is "received." The beginning of the Christian life is through receiving. The entire Christian walk is by the same principle.

Receiving other than God will not satisfy us. We can receive religion. We can receive theological and biblical ideas. We can receive high moral principles. We can receive devotion to a church or creed.

When God gives grace, God gives what will save us from striving for contentment from lesser receivings. For these, though often good in themselves, were never intended to give us what comes only by partaking of God Godself: spiritual love, spiritual joy, and spiritual peace.

Suggested Reflection

1. Relate the poem to the comments. How do they link together in thought and spirit?

2. Is God calling you from faith in the lesser goods to satisfy your spiritual longing to learn how to receive Him in intimacy on a daily basis? What will you have to give up to receive that newness of spiritual orientation? What rearrangements in priorities will this new focus require of you?
